Bathroom Remodeling Gone Cottage

Sheesh, what a week...DH took the week off from work and it's taken the entire week to update our bathroom ..bit by bit we're updating our home and banishing the oak woodwork..

Let me start by showing you our bathroom before..

It's really a nice size bathroom...

but it was time for an update...

This towel ring has been in the way for so long...

 and the oak linen closet was so ugly...

DH removed the cabinets and painted them in the garage....

very much like an assembly line...

deglosser...wipedown...primer...wipedown...laquer..lightly sanding..glaze..wipedown...sealer...

Let me show you how it turned out..

I added a wood applique to the front of the vanity...

okay DH added it but I picked it out...

Crown molding was added to the top of the linen cupboard...

New countertop...oynx...the most expensive part of the project..

We added a more substantial baseboard...

no more vinyl floor...love this tile floor!

 Moved the towel ring over and down...

much better now!

 Also added is the chair rail and crown molding...
(I need to redo the shelf on the wall...removing red from the room.)

And we're done...and exhausted...

Bathroom Under Construction

Last year we started updating our home by....

by painting our bedroom furniture...

We did all of the work over Memorial weekend..

The furniture looks fantastic and brought on another project...

Over 4th of July last year, we transformed our oak and very cluttered kitchen..

into this..

Why is it, the minute a camera comes out...one of our cats decides it's time to take his pictures?

And this week began with updating our bathroom...

Here's what it's looked like for 10+ years...

I'm so tired of oak everywhere!

Hubby pulled the cabinet out and painted it in the garage...

and we also raised the cabinets up 3 inches...

Today's plan is to grout the floor and paint the trim...

Should be done over the weekend...

Once this is done...I've got ideas...lots of them..

but hubby gets cranky when I start talking about them....

How We Painted Our Bedroom Furniture

Over Memorial Day, DH and I spent three days painting our bedroom set. And I was featured on

I've been asked what the process was, basically we did it the same way everyone does it but we used  ML Campbell Products instead of regular paint.

Here's how we did it:

• 
  
  Moved the furniture into the garage which we covered the floor with lots of those cheap plastic drop cloths.
• 
  
  Wiped down all the furniture with a mixture of Simple Green and water.
• 
  
  Rubbed on the deglosser, no need to sand when you use this...make sure to wear gloves and have a mask on..lots of fumes. We actually did the deglosser two times to make sure it broke down the finish.
• 
  
  We bought a HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray gun because it has low overspray and it's what the professionals use. Cost is about $100...not a bad investment.
• 
  
  We used the MagnaClaw Primer and sprayed on two coats, sanding after the second coat.
• 
  
  Wiped down with a wet towel to clear off the dust.
• 
  
  For the cream color, we used the Magnalac pigmented lacquer  and thined it down with lacquer thinner, spraying on two coats.
• 
  
  Next we applied the Woodsong II glaze, which was thinned down mineral spirits. We completely covered each piece and wiped off the excess glaze that we didn't want.
• 
  
  Applied two coats of Magnalac clear top coat to seal everything off.

DH did lots of research and found out that the ML Campbell brand is what the cabinet businesses use to paint cupboards. The laquer and topcoat dried so fast that the processes were really fast.

The laquer can be tinted to any color but make sure you do your research before starting to paint your furniture. 

And we even painted our ceiling fan with left over paint...

Here's the fan as it use to be, brass and very dated.

And Storm had to stay outside and wasn't happy that he couldn't be right in the middle of it all.

Have you heard of this? Room air freshners that you put on your ceiling fan or in the car. I found this at Lowes for a couple of bucks...smells good so far.

Saturday Nite Special

My Dollar Tree Birdies

I was so excited when I saw that the CSI Challenge this week is to make something from The Dollar Store.

Crystal and I got some of these birds from The Dollar Tree.

I thought  Crystal might be a little hesitant (I have the best daughter!) to buy these birds, but she was totally on board. So we each bought two and it was time to get crafting...

We painted the birds silver, using left over paint Crystal had. Really you could paint them with any kind of paint you have on hand.

Then after the paint dried, we sprayed on the leafing adhesive and added the leafing. This is a somewhat sticky process but definitely not difficult and doesn't take much time. We had all the supplies on hand from a gilding project we did last fall....

It looks best if you don't cover everything....
